Statement of Intent

Product 1

My magazine name is ‘ALTERNATIVE’ because it has connotations of indie music that targets the 16–25-year-old demographic. I have been assigned to work for an independent institution, not ‘Bauer’ which means that I will have more creative freedom. The technical layout of conventions will need to be applied such as masthead, coverlines, sell- line and different images to represent the indie music industry. The use of a house style will be bright but with elements of dark colours to create a house style fulfilling conventions of music magazines and to attract the audience’s attention to my indie music magazine. My covers will feature barcodes, issue number, price, website and social media handlebars to ensure that the front covers link to my website and to attract a wider audience as 16-25 year olds spend most of their time on social media. My main cover stars will be diverse in representation- issue 1 will feature a story about a male band representing the youth community to empower the youth to be more independent within themselves and issue 2 will feature a female singer representing autism as a hidden disability. The mis en scene will be appropriate for the genre as my costumes will be basic with a white t-shirt with skinny jeans and a black t shirt to show that styles don’t have to be outgoing. Also, there will be a microphone and instruments to reinforce the indie music industry. Both stories ‘OUTRUN ROCK EMPOWERING THE YOUTH’ and ‘HARMONIA TOPPED THE CHARTS WITH ‘I AM HERE’ REVEALING HER HIDDEN DISABILITY’, clearly fit the stereotypical tone of a music magazine but adapted for a younger demographic. The contents page will extend the brand identity in terms of colour and expand the representation of the main cover star, I will clearly have ‘online’ exclusives with a QR code on both contents and front covers to reinforce audiences to visit.

Product 2

To appeal to a younger audience, my website for ‘ALTERNATIVE’ will be interactive with videos, GIFs, social media posts, call to actions for competitions, feature stories and advertisements as well as the more typical conventions such as menu bar, images and a live feed. Most music magazine websites have a rather similar structure with main story at the top and multiple thumbnail sections below and I will follow a similar approach. I will ensure my website is structured and made to fit consumer interactivity with variation of stories relevant to younger audiences. The main cover stars from the ‘HIDDEN DISABILITY’ story will be the linked page and interactive video. All the stories will maintain the indie, lifestyle, gig, music representation also with gig and festival videos and stories. Across my website, I want to ensure that interaction with consumers is available therefore I will create pop ups and animations that will entertain and create quick navigation across the website through buttons and image links. I will include social media posts to ensure more engagement for the demographic. Also, I will include competitions and further videos and images to keep the 16–25-year-old demographic entertained. The colours and house styles that I include on my website will maintain the same theme as my indie music magazines to ensure the brand identity.
